Smith rejoins Saracens after stint in NFL with Jets

Australian born second rower Hayden Smith has rejoined Aviva Premiership Rugby club Saracens after an 18 month spell in the American National Football League (NFL) with the New York Jets.

Smith played for the Jets as a tight-end and made six appearances in the US National Football League.

While Smith was born in Australia and grew up in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney he plays international rugby for the United States after qualifying on residential grounds.

Smith’s sporting career started by playing Basketball in Sydney for the Sydney Kings. Whilst there he won a scholarship to play and study in the study Finance at the New York Institute of Technology but later transferred to Metro State College in Denver, Colorado where he completed his degree and moved from basketball to rugby union.

Upon his return to the North London club Smith said, “It’s fantastic to be back. I learned a huge amount in the NFL, various elements that will help me become a better rugby player, but there is nothing like the Saracens environment and I am now completely focussed on working hard and helping the squad achieve all our goals.”

Mark McCall, Director of Rugby, said,”Hayden is a phenomenal athlete with huge potential, and it’s great to have him back in the fold.”
