Whitely named Lions 2014 Super Rugby captain

Golden Lions loose forward Warren Whitely has been given the Lions captaincy for the 2014 Super Rugby competition according to reports.

According to Beeld Newspaper Lions Currie Cup captain and Whitely’s fellow loose forward Derick Minnie will act as the Lions Vice Captain.

Twenty-six-year-old Whitely was captain of the Lions when they won their Super Rugby promotion-relegation matches against the Southern Kings as well as the Lions Vodacom Cup team.

Whitely missed the Currie Cup earlier this year after having an operation on his finger.

The Lions start their Super Rugby campaign against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on February the 15th.

The Golden Lions will warm up for Super Rugby with three matches. They start their warm up matches against the Leopards at Ellis Park on Friday January the 24th.

On that day they will field ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams that will play two trial matches.

The Lions will then face the Southern Kings on on February the 1st in Port Elizabeth before hosting the Sharks at Ellis Park on February the 7th.
