Newcastle start LV Cup with London Irish victory

Newcastle Falcons kicked off their Anglo Welsh LV Cup campaign on a positive note as they beat London Irish 29-21 in a high-paced clash at Kingston Park on Sunday.

Newcastle spent last season in the Championship so they missed out on the LV Cup but started this season’s campaign with a victory and a second successive defeat of London Irish as they followed up their 13-11 Premiership success with a more comprehensive result.

The second-half sin-binning of prop Jamie Hagan proved crucial as Newcastle scored their second try while he was off to open some space on the scoreboard.

Newcastle led 16-11 at the break thanks to a try from Warren Fury with a second try from Richard Mayhew after the break and Rory Clegg’s kicking securing the win.
