Robinson: Chiefs are in the right frame of mind

Chiefs back Robbie Robinson says that there has been a “massive change in attitude” in the Chiefs camp and that the excitement of the Semi-finals will bring out the best in them.

The Chiefs will start their Semi-final match against the Crusaders as the underdogs even though they are the defending champions and they will be at home.

The Chiefs finished the regular season with three below par performances while their opposition the Crusaders have steadily improved week by week and hammered the 2011 champions 38-9 last week.

Robinson said that it had been tough to keep motivated week after week when they were leading the New Zealand Conference in all but one of the 20 weeks of Super Rugby.

However Robinson says now that the season has entered the do or die phase they have flicked a switch and their sense of urgency in preparation could not be stronger.

“There’s been a massive change in attitude,” Robinson told Sportal.

“I think sometimes maybe we don’t realise what you’ve got to do during the week to get up – it’s not just going to happen for you on the weekend.”

The low point of the Chiefs season was their 43-15 thrashing three weeks ago against Semi-final opponents and Robinson says that match was a timely wakeup call.

“I think it’s about experiencing that – you’ve got experience the losses to know what’s gone wrong and what you’d do differently,” added Robinson.

“What’s good about this team and last year’s team is that we learned from those losses.

“It’s the same this time – we’ve learned and we know what we’ve got to do throughout the week as a team to get in the right frame of mind for the game.”

The Chiefs have focused on the Crusaders midfield of Tom Taylor and Ryan Crotty and coach Dave Rennie has chosen a new centre combination but one with no shortage of experience.

Andrew Horrell starts alongside Charlie Ngatai for the first time this season while Gareth Anscombe returns to the fullback position.

Wing Asaeli Tikoirotuma has been named in the starting line up which means that Robinson has dropped to the bench.
