Lions captain: This feeling is ‘pretty indescribable’

British and Irish Lions captain Alun Wyn Jones said that his feelings were “pretty indescribable” after the Lions won their first series in 16 years by smashing the Wallabies 16-41 in Sydney.

The Lions won the first Test in Brisbane but failed to bring the same momentum for the second Test in Melbourne and lost as the Wallabies levelled the series 1 all.

“I think the scoreline reflects what we wanted to do from the changing room, and that’s to represent the four countries with pride and not give up,” he said.

It was also a personal triumph for coach Warren Gatland, who caused an uproar by dropping Irish legend Brian O’Driscoll and fielding a record-equalling 10 Welshmen in the starting XV.

“I think we’ve played some great rugby on the tour. In the first Test it was two tries each, it was a tight encounter last week and we were able to put it together tonight, particularly in the second half,” Gatland said.

“I thought the guys played exceptionally well. They deserve a lot of credit, these players.”

The large and noisy Lions contingent of supporters celebrated in the final minutes by singing “Sweet Chariot” in salute to their team’s first series win since South Africa in 1997.

Australia captain James Horwill admitted his team “just weren’t good enough” on the night, despite running the tourists desperately close 23-21 in the first Test and edging last week’s game by a single point.

“We dug deep and we tried as much as we could, I’m very proud of every single one of you blokes (team), but in the end you would have to say that the better team on the night won,” he said.
