Schwalger set to return early for Hurricanes

Former All Black prop John Schwalger has been given clearance to play the remaining three rounds of Super Rugby for the Hurricanes by the New Zealand Rugby Union.

The clearance means that Schwalger will be available for the Hurricanes match against the Chiefs in Hamilton on Friday which would be his first Super Rugby match in New Zealand for three years.

Twenty-eight-year-old Schwalger played for the Hurricanes against the Crusaders in a friendly at Levin in Friday but it was thought that he was ineligible to play in Super Rugby this season.

Super Rugby organisers SANZAR recently denied a request by the Chiefs to clear former All Black centre Casey Laulala to play in the tournament as coach Dave Rennie had wanted to bring back from overseas as injury cover and they cited the April deadline.

Schwalger’s case is however different as he has re-signed with Wellington and the Hurricanes for the next two years and is based in New Zealand.

The former All Black would however need further clearance if the Hurricanes make the play offs.

Schwalger’s availability comes ata good time for the Hurricanes as prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen is out with a knee injury.

The Hurricanes have three available props in Ben Franks, Ben May and Reggie Goodes and Schwalger has been training with the squad over the past few weeks.

The Hurricanes have also revealed that second five-eighth Tim Bateman won’t play again this season after he suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury suffered playing for Old Boys University in club rugby two weeks ago.
