Samoa brush Italy aside in South Africa

Samoa survived early pressure to triumph 39-10 against Italy at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday and reach the final of a South African four-nation tournament.

South Africa, who play Scotland at the same venue in the second part of a double-header, are the likely final opponents on June 22 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The Pacific Islanders tackled the Italians into submission to come away with
their second victory of the series and would feature in the main match in the
last double-header in Pretoria next week.

Despite their early domination, Italy could not find the breakthrough with
Samoa scoring the first points of the match 21 minutes into the encounter.

The Samoans demonstrated just how dangerous they could be given space in which
to manoeuvre.

Flyhalf Tusiata Pisi pierced the Italian defence and found a support player
on his shoulder who, in turn, offloaded to captain Paul Williams to score the
try. Williams then converted his try for the seven points.

Italy replied with a Gonzalo Garcia penalty conversion five minutes later.

It proved to be their only points of the match as Samoa grew in confidence
and attacked with greater intent.

Williams restored the seven point lead with a penalty in the 31st minute with
Samoa enjoying a 10-3 advantage going into the half-time break.

Samoa started the second half in emphatic style with Pisi again playing a pivotal
role in their second try.

His through-kick was fielded by Alapati Leiua close to the sideline allowing
the latter to cut inside and score. Williams added a penalty conversion 10 minutes
later to extend their lead to 18-3.

Samoa again displayed their counterattacking ability as Italy fumbled the ball
in the opposition’s 22 with the islanders scoring through John Leota, which
Williams converted.

The Samoans scored their fourth try of the match in the 64th minute with hooker
Wayne Ole Avei doing well to keep the ball in play and offload to a speeding
Taiasina Tuifua, who crossed the whitewash.

The Italians was rewarded a penalty try with 10 minutes remaining for some
consolation late in the match.

Their joy, however, was short-lived as Samoa’s Brandon Va’aulu scored a fifth
try for a convincing 39-10 victory.
