Timani ruled out of British & Irish Lions tests

Wallabies and Waratahs second rower Sitaleki Timani has been ruled out of the Wallabies Test series against the British & Irish Lions.

The Waratahs lock consulted specialists today in Sydney after breaking his right thumb during last weekend’s one-point loss to the Crusaders in Super Rugby.

The outcome was that the injury will require surgery to correct, with the recovery timeline ruling out participation in the upcoming Test series.

Timani should be available for the start of the Rugby Championship in August.

Meanwhile injured Melbourne Rebels loose forward Scott Higginbotham today underwent scans in Sydney after sustaining a dislocated right shoulder last Saturday night in his side’s 20-33 Super Rugby defeat against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

The Rebels captain will be reassessed later this week after the shoulder has been allowed to settle, and has returned to Brisbane in the interim.

Both Timani and Higginbotham were replaced in the preliminary Wallabies squad, with their places being taken by NSW Waratahs lock Kane Douglas and Western Force backrower Ben McCalman respectively.

The Wallabies are in camp in Sydney preparing for the start of the Australia 2013 Lions Tour Test series, which opens at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on June 22.

The current squad of 25 will be enlarged to 31, with the final six players to be added on June 11, after Super Rugby has entered its June break.

Halfback Nic White, who will play for the Brumbies against the Melbourne Rebels in Canberra on Friday, will join the Wallabies camp for training tomorrow during his Super Rugby team’s training free day.

Melbourne Rebels fullback Kurtley Beale is also training with the squad this week.
