Waratahs coach Cheika furious with Ref Jackson

Waratahs coach Michael Cheika was so angry after his team’s 23-22 loss to the Crusaders that he tried to call SANZAR referees boss Lyndon Bray from AMI Stadium.

“I am very disappointed, the game was taken away from us,” said Cheika after the game adding that Bray had not replied to some other queries earlier in the week.

“You can do what Graham Henry did and pay for telling the truth, or you go through the official channels, which is what I did ” Now what I am supposed to do?”

“It’s my dressing room that is shattered because they played their hearts out. They deserved to win,” Cheika told The Age.

Interestingly Graham Henry spoke out about the same referee Glen Jackson (and the TMO) after his team also lost to the Crusaders in Christchurch.

The Waratahs had the chance to win the match in extra time with a penalty kick but Berrick Barnes’ attempts went wide handing victory to the Crusaders.

Six minutes earlier Dan Carter put the Crusaders into the lead for the first time in the match with the what turned out to be the winning penalty from 49m out.

After the match Carter said that he knew he had the range to succeed with his kick but after he had kicked it he wasn’t immediately confident enough to turn his back before watching the ball drop just over the crossbar.

“I knew if I hit it well it would go over – I hit the odd one from 50m out at training and normally have the distance,” Carter said.

“But you never know in the dewy conditions. I was just praying for it to go over and thankfully it just snuck over the crossbar.”

Carter said that he was was equally nervous when he had to watch Barnes take his penalty attempt which would have earned the Waratahs their first win in Christchurch since 2004.

“I actually sat right under the upright to see whether he struck it well,” Carter added.

“I was pretty gutted to give him a chance to win the game. We got out of jail really.”

“We were just too passive into that first half, falling off tackles and letting them back into the game.”
