Viljoen to start ahead of Labuschagne for Cheetahs

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has confirmed that flank Frans Viljoen will replace Lappies Labuschagne due to injury for their match against the Hurricanes on Friday.

Labuschagne suffered an elbow injury in the Cheetahs match against the Southern Kings on April the 27th.

Coach Drotske said that Labuschagne is not yet ready to return for the Cheetahs but could be back for their match against the Reds on May the 18th.

Thirty-year-old Viljoen will add to the Cheetahs physicality and has impressed this season after being given a second chance by Drotske at the start of this season.

Viljoen has struggled for form in recent years and after a string of injuries was without a contract before Drotske gave him another chance.

This week’s match against the Hurricanes will be Viljoen’s fifth start of the 2013 season.

“Frans and Heins (Heinrich Brussow) will start. Frans is physical and the right guy to pick against a New Zealand team,” Drotske told Volksblad.

“Lappies is good in the lineouts and we’ll miss his high work-rate, but there’s nothing we can do about that.”

The Cheetahs are currently in sixth place in the overall Super Rugby standings and second in the South African conference and have had one bye (last week).
