Mains: Losing Macintosh was Highlanders mistake

Former All Blacks and Highlanders coach Laurie Mains says that he believes the Highlanders made a mistake when they demoted Jamie Macintosh.

Former captain Macintosh has seen little game time in the 2013 Super Rugby season after the arrival of All Blacks loosehead prop Tony Woodcock

The former Cats coach Mains says that the Highlanders lost a lot more that Macintosh’s 1.93 metre frame when they took the captaincy from him.

“If I use one name, who was a symbol to me of the guts and determination that the Highlanders forward pack played with last year and the year before, was Jamie Macintosh.

“And he was captain,” Mains reasoned with Newstalk ZB.

Mains said he believes the Highlanders problem this season is that they replaced a group of young enthusiastic players with players that are at the end of their careers.
