George Smith free to play British & Irish Lions

Brumbies coach Jake White has been given an extension to George Smith’s contract until the end of the Super Rugby season which will make him eligible to play against the British and Irish Lions.

The Brumbies signed Smith to ease the load on David Pocock but he was injured early in the season and Smith has filled in since Pocock left the field.

The Courier Mail has revealed that Smith’s Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath have given the all clear for 110-Cap Smith to be called up by the Wallabies if they want him.

Smith had been on a loan deal until May the 31st making his last game against the Hurricanes but now Suntory have told White he can keep Smith until the end of Super Rugby in early August.

Smith’s availability comes at an interesting time as he will go up against Reds young gun Liam Gill this weekend at Suncorp Stadium.

Gill and Waratahs flanker Michael Hooper were expected to challenge for Pocock’s position but now Smith has entered the equation.
