Chiefs still working on getting Sonny Bill back

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says that he believes the Super Rugby and Rugby World Cup winning back Sonny Bill Williams could return to Super Rugby for the Chiefs one day.

Twenty-seven-year-old Williams is currently playing NRL for the Sydney Roosters after he honoured a one year deal over a handshake with club boss Nick Politis.

Williams made no secret that he wanted to stay with the Chiefs when he left the Super Rugby champions and coach Rennie is keen to see the former All Black playing Super Rugby in Hamilton again.

“We’re working pretty hard in that area and we are pretty confident we can maybe lure him back here at some stage,” Rennie told AAP.

“But when that is there is no confirmation.

“He made a real commitment to league and he might be there for a couple of years yet. There’s no guarantees about that but he’s certainly committed there this year.

“(With 2015) being a World Cup year, hopefully that will be attractive to him.”

As Williams agreed to switch codes on the strength of a handshake before Rennie was asked whether he had shaken hands with the midfielder.

“No, we didn’t put him under that sort of pressure,” Rennie said.

However Rennie was adamant that Williams who also played for the Crusaders would not be looking further than the Chiefs if he returns.

“If he comes back to New Zealand, he’ll come to the Chiefs,” said Rennie.

“He loved it here. He loved the boys and obviously was a big part of our success.

“There’s no way he can go to anywhere else other than here.”

Rennie added that he would have no problems with having to deal with Williams’s agent, Khoder Nasser again.

“Khoder was easy to work with despite what other people would say,” he said.

“I think we were up front with our expectations of Sonny, especially in and around the boxing, and so were they and I think everybody delivered. So it was a pretty easy marriage to be honest.

“Sonny is just a fantastic guy. Obviously he’s a terrific player but a huge role model for our guys and incredibly professional. “

“Those sort of players you want in your mix all the time.”
