Gear enjoying Highlanders captaincy role

Highlanders winger Hosea Gear has admitted that he has enjoyed the captaincy role in the absence of regular captain Andrew Hore.

Gear took over the captaincy while Hore is serving his five week suspension for a swinging arm tackle on Welshman Bradley Davies in last year’s All Black end of year tour.

Hore’s ban meant that he missed the All Blacks loss to England as well as three pre-season matches for the Highlanders.

The suspension was for five weeks so Hore will miss the Highlanders Super Rugby opener against the Chiefs in Dunedin on Friday and as they have a bye in round three Hore will only be back for the Cheetahs game in Invercargill on March the 9th.

Under Gear the Highlanders lost to the Chiefs and Blues but beat the Crusaders in Oamaru.

The winger scored a hat-trick of tries against the Blues in Queenstown on Friday.

Gear said that he enjoyed the experience of captaining the Highlanders.

“It’s been challenging at times but I’m fortunate that we’ve got a lot of experienced guys in the side. “

“That definitely takes a load off my shoulders. Trying to get the boys to gel together is the most important thing for me,” Gear said.

When asked how he would take handing the captaincy back to Hore who was announced as the Highlanders 2013 captain last year he joked, “I’m sort of getting used to it, eh.”

“It’s like I said, I don’t think my role will change much,” he told Fairfax NZ News.

“We are more of a group as opposed to one guy leading the team.”

Gear hopes that he can carry the form he has enjoyed through the pre-season, in which he has scored five tries, through to Super Rugby.

“The boys showed a lot of character and we talked at halftime about doing the basics.”
