London Wasps vs Worcester LV= Cup preview

Worcester Warriors have made five changes to their starting line-up that will play London Wasps in the Anglo Welsh LV= Cup at Adams Park on Sunday afternoon.

Worcester opened the cup competition with a bonus point win over Scarlets at Sixways to top the Pool 2 standings after the opening round of games.

Assistant Head Coach Nigel Redman makes four changes in the pack with a new-look front row of Ceri Jones, Ollie Hayes and Rob O’Donnell, who makes his first start for Warriors since a summer move from Rotherham Titans.
Towering lock Craig Gillies named in the second row alongside captain Dean Schofield while Errie Claassens is the only change to the back division as he returns at full back.

Redman said: “We made a good start last week against Scarlets and we would like to continue that momentum in this competition and going back into the Aviva Premiership.

“The way the competition is spread through the season, we play Wasps this Sunday and then don’t play another LV= Cup game till the New Year so we want to secure a second win to stay at the top of the group.

“We’re treating every game as a game to improve and that’s what we’ll aim to do again this Sunday – improve on what we’ve done already this year.

“We have already played Wasps in the league. It will be different, I’m sure, in the LV= Cup. It gives them a chance to play their squad players and it gives us a chance to play our players who are pressing for positions, those who want to put our first-choice players under pressure.

Meanwhile six new faces come into the starting London Wasps line-up including captain Hugo Southwell who comes in at fullback and speedster Tom Varndell who starts on the wing.

Matt Everard makes his first competitive start of the season, having impressed off the bench in Cardiff last weekend, while in the second-row, with Marco Wentzel ruled out with a knock, Wasps have called up Josh Brown from London Scottish to fill an area already shorn by the inclusion of Joe Launchbury and Tom Palmer in the England side this weekend.

Tom Lindsay and Ashley Johnson are the other new starters, with both coming back into the team having been rested last weekend.

On the bench 18-year-old Dave Hughes, and 21-year-old Will Taylor will be hoping for their second ever appearance, having both made their debuts last weekend, while James Haskell covers the back-row having returned from England duty this week.

Young said: “We gave a disappointing account of ourselves last weekend and I am looking for the team to show me a lot more on Sunday. We’re in good form at Adams Park but Worcester had a big win against Scarlets last weekend and will come to us very confident. We need to show a big step up in our performance this weekend.”
