Ireland lose Paul O’Connell for South Africa Test

Ireland have suffered a major blow ahead of their Test match this weekend against South Africa as Paul O’Connell has been ruled out due to injury.

Former British and Irish Lions captain O’Connell was an injury doubt but his withdrawal from selection has been confirmed due to a back injury.

O ‘Connell returned to training at the start of this week and took a full part in the squad sessions on Monday and Tuesday, but suffered a reaction and will not be fit for selection for this weekend ‘s game.

O’Connell will see a specialist in the coming days and an update will be issued in due course.
