Clermont Auvergne secured a convincing 49-16 victory over a 14 man Scarlets team in their opening Heineken Cup match at Stade Marcel Michelin.
Scarlets managed to get ahead of Clermont early in the first half but when Morgan Stoddart was shown a red card in the 37th minute Clermont started to run away with the victory.
