Kings blocked from signing further foreign players

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) have blocked the Southern Kings from building a Super Rugby squad for next year filled with foreign rugby talent.

SARU have confirmed that the maximum number of foreign players per Super Rugby franchise in South Africa will remain limited to two players.

The Kings were given a place in next year’s Super Rugby tournament at the expense of the Lions who they will face in a promotion relegation match next season if the Kings finish in last place for South African teams.

The Kings will be guided by former Canterbury and Crusaders hooker and now Kings Head coach Matt Sexton and former Ulster, Northampton and Springboks assistant coach Alan Solomons.

Head coach Sexton who is on a two year contract despite the Kings only being gauranteed one year of Super Rugby revealed to New Zealand media this week that the Kings playing roster is currently only half full and said recently that they were hoping to sign six foreign players.

The Kings had asked SARU to lift the restriction while they build a Super Rugby squad as the Australian Rugby Union did for the Melbourne Rebels.

The Kings were created to develop and hold on to talent in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa and Boss Cheeky Watson said earlier this week that they had signed Argentina’s Nicolas Vergallo and New Zealand Aucklander Hadleigh Parkes.

However the signings may not be allowed to go ahead as the Kings already have New Zealand prop Clint Newland and Samoan wing Paul Perez on their books.

Vergallo is believed to be signed to Toulouse until 2014 so his signing may not go ahead anyway but the Kings appear to already have more than their quota of foreigners.
