Houston is happy in Red

The Reds announced on Tuesday that have secured former Australia ‘A’ back row forward Leroy Houston on a two-year deal.

Houston, who was selected out of the Under-19 ranks by then national coach Eddie Jones to tour with the Wallabies on their year-end tour in 2005, quit professional rugby last year because of personal problems.

He was first granted leave by the Waratahs and then later released from his contract, before he returned to his family in New Zealand.

However, the prospect of again being coached by Jones swung the 20-year-old, 110kg number eight towards the Reds after also fielding an offer from the Western Force.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining the Reds for the next two years,” Houston said.

“I think they’re an organisation going forward and I can’t wait to be part of that.

“Having Eddie Jones as head coach sealed the deal as he picked me as a teenager to go on a Wallaby tour,” Houston said.

Queensland Rugby CEO Ken Freer tipped Houston to be a fully fledged Wallaby by next year.

“He’s a big, powerful forward and he’s highly motivated to succeed with this opportunity. We’ll be looking after him and giving him every chance to succeed,” Freer said.
