Team of the Week – S14 Round 13

This week we have a stable of wild horses and a stampeding herd of bulls. Yes, the Brumbies and Bulls, which threw the Super 14 play-offs wide open, dominate our team this week.

They each provide four members of our chosen XV this week, a side that shows 12 changes from last week – with just fullback Julian Huxley (Brumbies), wing Bryan Habana (Bulls) and prop Carl Hayman (Highlanders) back this week.

The only team other than the Bulls and Brumbies to have more than one player in our team is the Sharks (with two).

The Waratahs, Western Force, Highlanders, Chiefs and Lions make up the numbers – with one each.

Here’s our selection!

Team of the Week Round 13:

15 – Julian Huxley (Brumbies):
Is he Australia’s first choice fullback? We think so.
Bubbling under: Johan Roets (Bulls)

14 – Lachlan Turner (Waratahs):
This one man is going to be around for a while. One of the few positives to come out of the Waratahs’ campaign this year.
Bubbling under: Hosea Gear (Hurricanes)

13 – Stirling Mortlock (Brumbies):
His return brought a dramatic improvement to a Brumbies backline that suddenly showed its class … world class.
Bubbling under: Jean de Villiers (Stormers)

12 – Matt Giteau (Western Force):
He is a genius and a game-breaker … almost without peer.
Bubbling under: Aaron Mauger (Crusaders)

11 – Bryan Habana (Bulls):
He is producing the best form of his life and at a time when South African could do with some genuine game-breakers.
Bubbling under: Brent Russell (Stormers)

10 – Stephen Larkham (Brumbies):
He deserved nothing less that a great send-off from Canberra Stadium. He got the perfect send-off.
Bubbling under: Peter Grant (Stormers)

9 – Fourie du Preez (Bulls):
Undoubtedly the best scrum-half in the world at the moment.
Bubbling under: George Gregan (Brumbies)

8 – Stephen Hoiles (Brumbies):
One of the Brumbies’ most astute signings and how the Waratahs are now regretting that they let him go.
Bubbling under: Joe van Niekerk (Stormers)

7 – Wikus van Heerden (Bulls):
Quiet and unassuming, but doing a stirling job as an openside flank for the Bulls.
Bubbling under: George Smith (Brumbies)

6 – Jacques Botes (Sharks):
One of the Sharks’ unsung heroes.
Bubbling under: Schalk Burger (Stormers)

5 – Victor Matfield (Bulls):
Still without peer in his position.
Bubbling under: Johan Muller (Sharks)

4 – Johan Ackermann (Sharks):
The old man of the Sharks is certainly worth his considerable weight in gold.
Bubbling under: Rudi Vedelago (Western Force)

3 – Carl Hayman (Highlanders):
Not just world class, the best in the world.
Bubbling under: Brok Harris (Stormers)

2 – Aled de Malmanche (Chiefs):
One of the many young front row forwards to leave their mark on the Super 14 this year.
Bubbling under: John Smit (Sharks)

1 – Heinke van der Merwe (Lions):
Read above at No.2!
Bubbling under: Gurthro Steenkamp (Bulls)
