Leicester interested in South African Wessel Jooste

Leicester Tigers Director of Rugby Richard Cockerill has revealed that they are looking at signing South African back-row forward Wessel Jooste.

Thirty-one-year-old Jooste has played for French Top 14 side Bourgoin for the last eight seasons and Leicester say that if he can complete the necessary paperwork they would be interested.

“He’s been on trial with us,” Cockerill told BBC Radio Leicester.

“But he’s one who is sorting out whether he can get into the country from a visa and work permit point.”

Leicester have already started warming up for the new Aviva Premiership Rugby season and have already added nine players to their squad.

The number of injuries such as Tom Croft (neck) and Craig Newby (knee) have seen the Tigers re-sign Gloucester’s back-row Brett Deacon but Jooste’s versatility would be a useful addition.

“He’s very big, athletic and strong,” Cockerill added.

“He’s played all across the back row for Bourgoin, and lock.

“He’s certainly someone who if all of the pieces of the jigsaw fit into place could be a possibility.”
