Hurricane Savea happy to play wing on either side

Hurricanes left winger Julian Savea says that he would be happy to play rugby on the right wing if the All Blacks wanted him to do so.

Savea has been one of the form wingers in this season’s Super Rugby tournament including a hat-trick of tries against the Rebels in the Hurricanes 66-24 victory over the men from Melbourne.

The Hurricanes winger is one of three specialist wingers in the All Blacks wider training group with Zac Guildford and the recently included Highlander Hosea Gear.

Last season Savea played on the right wing as he could not get ahead of former Hurricane Gear but since the former moved to the Highlanders Savea has siezed his chance.

“On defence it’s probably a bit different,” Savea told Sportal when asked if there was much difference between the two positions.

“I played on the right last year so I probably wouldn’t mind (the switch).”

Savea’s international break may come soon as the 21-year-old could find he is in the right place at the right time as All Blacks incumbents Cory Jane and Richard Kahui both out injured.

However Savea is not getting too excited as suggestions he already has one of those spots sewn up.

“Hopefully they can talk to Steve (All Blacks coach Steve Hansen),” he joked.

“I’m just here enjoying the camps and waiting for my opportunity.”

2012 is Savea’s second year in Super Rugby and he admits that being called up for the first All Blacks get-together last week made him a little nervous.

“I’m getting more comfortable. Just being a new fella I was star-struck to see all the All Blacks you’ve been watching over the years.

“I feel now that I’m part of the team. But until the actual team’s been named, then I think I’ll feel more comfortable.”
