Smith :’ Hurricanes just didn’t play very well’

Hurricanes captain Conrad Smith conceded that the Hurricanes could have performed better in their 25-37 loss to the Brumbies in Wellington.

The Hurricanes scored four tries earning them a bonus point but remain in eighth place overall and two points outside the top six.

“I don’t think we were playing that well, even when we had the lead,” Smith said.

“I don’t think we started playing badly, we just didn’t play very well for the whole 80 minutes.”

“We just made a lot of mistakes and it came back to bite us.”

“They play a simple game of footy and just try to put pressure on you and when they did we came unstuck a few times.”

When asked what was said at half time to spark the Brumbies comeback captain Ben Mowen revealed, “I just said stick to the things that are working for us.”

“That first 10 or 15 minutes, we were able to accumulate 13 points with not a lot of field position so I said when we’re down there just be patient because we are going to get points.

“The Hurricanes attacked very well and put us under a lot of pressure and we were fortunate that we scrambled hard and didn’t give away more points than we did.”

The Brumbies now comfortably lead the Australian conference and are almost certain to make the play offs as they currently have a thirteen point lead on the Reds who they play next week in Canberra.

“It’s going to be another important game for us,” Mowen said of next week’s Reds match.

“But we’ll just see how the guys have pulled up after this, then look forward.”
