Belmont Shore keep momentum going

Belmont Shore won the biggest match of the USA Rugby Super League season Saturday, downing fellow Red Conference powerhouse San Francisco Golden Gate 28-5 to remain undefeated and a clear favorite to return to the league championship play-offs.

Meanwhile, both Chicago squads – the Lions and the Griffins – won in convincing fashion and remained atop the White and Blue conferences, respectively.

The Lions downed league newcomers Boston Irish Wolfhounds 40-27 while the Griffins travelled to Washington, D.C. and surprised Potomac Athletic Club 31-13.

New York Athletic Club greatly improved their chances of making the play-offs by beating White Conference rival Dallas 20-13 and jumping ahead of the Harlequins into second place.

Old Blue of New York also moved up in the standings – to second place in the Blue Conference – with a 62-20 win over the St. Louis Bombers

Defending league champions Old Mission Beach Athletic Club exploded for 14 tries in an 88-7 blowout of visiting Old Puget Sound Beach, keeping pace with Red Conference rivals Santa Monica, who downed the Denver Barbarians 30-25 and moved into second place.

Also winning – and thus keeping alive their slim hopes of making the play-offs -were Boston Rugby, who beat rock-bottom Charlotte 17-8, and Philadelphia-Whitemarsh, who topped Washington 23-12.
