US Super League taking shape

Several teams’ seasons could be on the line this Saturday and play-off favorites will emerge as crucial conference match-ups highlight the USA Rugby Super League schedule.

The Belmont Shore-San Francisco Golden Gate match winner will have to be considered a leading favorite to reach the Super League finals.

Belmont, with maximum 20 points so far, enter the match undefeated and sitting atop the extremely competitive Red Conference.

San Francisco with 16 points, toppled defending league champ Old Mission Beach Athletic Club four weeks ago and have been rolling over opponents ever since.

Belmont and San Francisco will most likely make the play-offs regardless of Saturday’s result, but none of the other Red Conference teams can take a loss lightly.

A win for third-placed Santa Monica over fifth-placed Denver (2-2, 9 league points) would severely hamper the Barbarians play-off chances while putting Santa Monica in good position to reach the post-season in its first year with the Super League.

Meanwhile, Old Puget Sound Beach are already on the verge of missing out on the play-offs, and won’t get any favours from fourth-placed – and with a game in hand – Old Mission in San Diego.

In the White Conference, the Dallas Harlequins-New York Athletic Club and Chicago Lions-Boston Irish Wolfhounds matches could shake up the standings. The Harlequins for instance, could find themselves in first place or as far down as fourth place depending on the outcomes of the two matches.

The Philadelphia-Whitemarsh v Washington match, meanwhile, will decide which squad still has a legitimate shot at the play-offs, with both sides struggling after only one win from four.

The play-off situation in the Blue Conference is also a four-horse race, although Boston are one loss away from losing out. But they go into a match at home to winless Charlotte Saturday on the back of a big win over Old Puget last week.

The Blue conference-leading Chicago Griffins will have their work cut out for them against a Potomac Athletic Club squad looking for redemption after losing their first match Saturday to Belmont Shore.

Old Blue of New York could meanwhile climb to second place with a win over St. Louis
