Dawidiuk extends Gloucester Rugby contract

Aviva Premiership Club Gloucester Rugby have announced that hooker Darren Dawidiuk has signed a new contract and will remain at Kingsholm until at least the end of the 2013-4 season.

24 year old Dawidiuk joined Gloucester in the summer of 2009 from the Cornish Pirates in the Championship.

Vying for playing time alongside the likes of Olivier Azam and Scott Lawson, the Truro born hooker made steady progress and the most of his opportunities in his first two seasons including picking up an LV= Cup winners medal.

However, 2011-12 has really been his breakthrough season at the club when, with Scott Lawson away at the Rugby World Cup and Matias Cortese injured, he rose to the challenge of being first choice hooker.

A solid scrummager, he is a reliable lineout thrower and also has the mobility to get around the park and score the occasional try.

He has already made more starts in 2011-12 than in his first two seasons at the club combined and is feeling more and more at home in the top flight as he confirmed to the club website:

“I’ve had a great season of rugby and I’m feeling very settled here. I’m delighted that the coaches offered me the chance of another two years with Gloucester Rugby and I intend to repay their faith.

“Gloucester has really become my home. I have a great relationship with all the lads here not just at training but off the field as well.

“My game has really come on during my time here but I appreciate that I’m still developing as a player and I really want to push on to benefit both myself and the club.”

Head Coach Bryan Redpath added that Dawidiuk has grasped his opportunity with both hands this season.

“He’s improved as a result of the more game time he’s had because of the World Cup and he’s put real pressure on Scott Lawson.

“Credit to him, he’s come through our system over the last two or three years and he’s continuing to improve things like his scrummaging thanks to his work with John Brain.

“He’s done exceptionally well and he’s another good signing for us. He’s got bags of upside, he wants to stay here, he wants to improve. He’s bought into what Gloucester is about and that’s what we want.”
