Newcastle Falcons too much for Lyon Olympique

Newcastle Falcons earned a  comfortable 27-19 Amlin Challenge Cup Pool 2 victory over Lyon Olympique at Kingston Park in the North East of England on Saturday.

Two tries from Falcons second-row Tim Swinson was the main difference between the sides at Kingston Park this afternoon. Jeremy Manning opened the scoring with a penalty after three minutes and Lyon then responded in like with Eric Tonamichel kicking three points of his own.

Swinson then crossed for the first of his tries before Manning extended the Falcons lead with a second penalty.

Tonamichel kicked two quick penalties to bring the scores to 11 v 9 but Swinson’s second score right on the stroke of half-time gave his side some much needed breathing space.

Jordi Pasqualin struck first in the second half before Nicolas Bontinick responded with Lyon’s first European score three minutes later.

Tonamichel added the extras before Romain Loursac took over the kicking duties and the replacement further narrowed the deficit with a 61st minute penalty.

It was Newcastle who controlled last ten minute and two more penalties form the boot of Manning saw them home safe and denied the visitors a losing bonus-point.
