Mitchell praises his Currie Cup Champion Lions

Lions Currie Cup winning rugby coach John Mitchell has heaped praise on his players for keeping calm and “getting the job done”.

The Lions ended 12 years of Currie Cup dissapointment when they beat the Sharks 42-16 at Coca Cola Park to win the 2011 Currie Cup title.

The Lions led comfortably at half time but the Sharks started a second half comeback in the high pressure match only for the Lions to hit back with two second half tries.

“To fill the corners of Ellis Park is a testament to these guys (Lions players),” Mitchell said.

“It is important to savour what we are experiencing tonight.”

Sharks coach John Plumtree was gracious in defeat, conceding that they were outwitted by the better team.

“We were outplayed pretty much in every area,” Plumtree said.

“It was disappointing that we didn’t capitalise on the momentum we had in the first half, especially when they had 14 men.”
