Sharks bash Blues

This was a live score update.

The Sharks come off the back of their thrashing of the Reds, a victory that has served to re-ignite the psychological drive of their campaign – and the 5-pointer came in handy too.

But the Blues have been playing dynamic, exciting, and hard-edged rugby all year, a style of play that has been characterised by their superb support play, allowing pacy runners to offload to other pacy runners in the tackle zone.

The Sharks have added a grit upfront to their game this year, but that seemed to come at an expense of some of their attacking flair.

But last week’s victory demonstrated that the likes of Waylon Murray, JP Pietersen and Francois Steyn do have it in them to score some scintillating tries.

The only question is, can they do it against the vastly superior to the Reds outfit of the Blues?

Match Detail

The Sharks Frans Steyn had an early shot at goal but missed.

Odwa Ndungane got the first try of the match for the Sharks even though the pass was a bit forward.  Percy Montgomery missed the conversion.

Stuart Dickinson awarded the Blues a penalty almost in front of the posts so Isa Nacewa took a shot at goal and got the Blues their first points of the match.

Percy Montgomery slotted a penalty for the Sharks.

That was then followed by a huge 55 metre Drop goal from Frans Steyn giving the Sharks an 8 point lead.

Isa Nacewa then slotted a penalty for the Blues as the rain comes down.

Percy Montgomery then slotted another penalty for the Sharks as the Blues discipline starts to slip a little.

The Sharks JP Pietersen get an easy try as the Blues fumble the ball behind the scrum. The try was however not converted.

The Half time score was Blues 6  Sharks 19

The Sharks JP Pietersen gets a charge down and scores another easy try.  Percy Montgomery converts the try and Blues are 20 points behind.

The tension is building in these two sides as we see a bit of “handbags” on the field. At the end of it Sam Tuitupou gets a yellow card for throwing a three punches. He had been warned before. The Sharks opt for the lineout in the penalty.

Keven Mealamu scores a try for the Blues with 20 minutes to play and Isa Nacewa sends the conversion in off the post.

Frans Steyn adds another three to the Sharks tally as he puts in another drop goal restoring the lead to 16 points.

The Blues pile on the pressure and Percy drops the ball behind the tryline and the Blues pounce. Dickinson goes upstairs to confirm that David Gibson scored the try. It’s good but Isa Nacewa’s conversion hits the post again and this one does not go in.

The Sharks must now be looking for the bonus point try.

The Blues give away another penalty and Steyn slots the penalty to give the Sharks a two try lead.

Daniel Braid scored a last minute try giving the Blues hope. Isa Nacewa then gets the conversion which could assure them the bonus point.

Report to follow.
