Scarlets’ celebrations at Parc Y Scarlets were short lived on Saturday night as Isa Nacewa booted his team to a 10-15 victory in the Llanelli Side’s 5000th fixture
When Llanelli became the Scarlets with the regionalisation of Welsh Rugby in 2003, they were the only team to truly keep their roots in tact. This weekend they celebrated their 5000th game but the champagne remained on ice as Leinster stole the win entirely through the boot of Isa Nacewa.
Heineken Cup holders Leinster kicked themselves to an unconvincing win, extinguishing the party atmosphere in the self styled ‘Heart of Rugby Country’ despite the Scarlets providing much of the excitement. Scarlet Lee Williams scored the only try of the game after the break to take the lead only for Nacewa to restore Leinster’s supremacy.
Scarlets sealed their own fate from there on in, making silly, penalty conceding, mistakes and going down to 14 men and failing to capitalise on some meaningful possession in the dying minutes. Their supporters may have 5,000 matches to be proud of but this was not one for either team.
