Slamming Sammy looks ahead

Europe-bound Blues centre Sam Tuitupou has asserted that there is no time to relax for the top of the log Auckland-based franchise.

The Blues are hungry for a home semi-final, but with a home match against the Sharks, followed by two matches in South Africa and a match in Australia, there is still plenty of work to do.

“It’s really important,” Tuitupou said of the home semi-final berth.

“We’re looking to have a home semi. Our main goal right from the start was to get a home semi and hopefully a home final if we go on from there. Even though we’ve had a good win [against the Cheetahs], the boys will look to park that pretty quickly and look forward to the next game.

“Every week we seem to take it up another level. Especially now it’s getting closer to the crunch time, we need to carry that on, and not just relax on the game last week but look to carry it on for the week coming up as well,” Tuitupou told XtraMSN.

“It all started back in the pre-season when we went away on camp. Last year the boys didn’t go too well, and we just felt this year we needed to come together as one. That’s what we based this year on — all in.

“And it shows, not just in the match 22 but the whole squad.”

“We’ve got some important games coming up, and we just can’t relax too much right now because we’re coming to crunch time.”

Tuitopou is especially hungry, knowing he is bound for Worcester in England at the end of the year.

“The saddest thing about going overseas is leaving all the boys behind, so you want to make it a special one for all the boys, and finish it strong.”

Tuitupou also lauded his midfield partner, Isaia Toeava.

“Ice is growing quite a bit. People said he needed confidence, and each week he’s showing he’s got confidence. He just seems to be playing out of his skin every week.”
