Leeds Tykes will return to top-flight rugby

The mounting pressure on Premiership strugglers Northampton and Worcester has been increased by the news that Leeds Tykes have secured their passage back to the top flight for next season.

The Tykes beat Otley 40-12 to move 10 points clear of Rotherham, meaning they cannot be caught by virtue of National League One guidelines.

As well as their unassailable lead, Headingley is sure to meet the criteria for stadia laid out by Premier Rugby, meaning they will be no get-out-of-jail card for whoever ends up bottom of the pile in the Premiership.

Tykes director of rugby Stuart Lancaster believes his team are ready for a long stay back in the top flight, insisting his current squad are good enough to hold their own next season.

“This is a fantastic achievement for us and I’m proud of everyone associated with the club for their efforts,” said Lancaster.

“There won’t be wholesale changes to this squad for next season.

“I’m confident in the ability of our squad to be more than competitive in the Guinness Premiership.

“Anyone who comes in will fit in to the culture of our club.

“I’ve been here since the formation of Leeds back in 1992 and this is one of the best achievements ever considering the position we were in less than 12 months ago,” he continued – referring to the losses of key players Justin Marshall, Iain Balshaw and Jordan Crane.

“It was always going to be a massive challenge but I was confident in our coaching staff, the culture we had created within the players and the group we had assembled.”
