Griquas end Sharks unbeaten run in Currie Cup

Griquas pulled off a shock 43-22 victory over the Sharks in the fourth round of the Currie Cup on Friday evening in Kimberley.

The Sharks led 14-16 at half time but got themselves into trouble in the second half and Griquas ran riot running in 29 points.

The Sharks went into the match unbeaten after three rounds.

Four tries and a superb kicking display by fullback Rudy Vogt ensured the Griquas recorded an empathic victory over Currie Cup title holders.

Vogt added 23 of his team’s points in a faultless performance that ended the visitors’ three-match unbeaten run.

After surviving a strong Sharks onslaught in the opening exchanges, the home side worked their way out of their own half before setting up camp on the other side of the field.

Flyhalf Earl Rose made the first break with a well timed grubber kick that caught the Sharks’ backs napping, but the first try would be scored only after Sharks skipper Keegan Daniel was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle.

With the advantage of an extra forward, the Griquas pack pushed hooker Ryno Barnes over the line with a rolling maul.

The Sharks responded with a Frederic Michalak penalty shortly after the returning kick-off to take the score to 7-3.

Again, however, Griquas showed more determination as they protected the ball well through the phases before sending lock Hendrik Roodt over in the corner in the 23rd minute.

Leading 14-3, the hosts took their foot off the peddle and allowed the Sharks to score 13 unanswered points before the break.

First Michalak slotted a penalty kick between the posts before in-form hooker Craig Burden finished off a period of outstanding control by the defending champions.

The French pivot then nailed his third three-pointer just before the break, giving his side a 16-14 lead.

The two-point advantage was, however, short-lived as Griquas responded with a sublime try through prop Lourens Adriaanse.

The hosts again gave away three easy points from the returning kick-off, and Springbok flyhalf Patrick Lambie ensured the ball went sailing between the posts.

Vogt converted his first penalty of the match in the 53rd minute, and 10 minutes later he added his second.

Lambie and Vogt would exchange penalties once more before the Sharks opted to go for the seven points rather than chipping away at the eight-point lead held by Griquas.

The visitors bagged no points from the subsequent lineout, and Griquas secured victory when Vogt nailed his seventh successful goal kick of the night.

Skipper Jonathan Mokuena finished it off in style for the home side when he scored the bonus point try in the 74th minute.
