Lions’ Le Grange in doubt for Currie Cup clash

The Lions could be without captain Doppies le Grange for their third-round Currie Cup match against the Leopards.

Le Grange retired injured from their thumping 49-11 win over Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday, and was replaced by Alwyn Hollenbach in the 16th minute.

The skipper said the injury would need to be assessed before a decision was made on his availability for the Leopards clash in Johannesburg.

“We’ll see what they say. I’ll have to go to the doctor for a scan, and hopefully he’ll have good news,” Le Grange said after the game.

Lions coach John Mitchell said the centre’s possible absence would have an impact, but it would also give an opportunity to a fringe player.

“It’s only the second week of the competition, so we’ll need to play better rugby while trying to ensure that depth is there,” Mitchell said.

“It will, however, give a younger player a chance to fill that place.”
