Lacklustre Bulls dissapoint

This was a live match report.

Preview

The big question this week has been: ‘Can the Hurricanes possibly play any worse than they did last week against the Lions or the previous week against the Sharks?’

The Wellington-based franchise had looked like a punch-drunk boxer just stumbling about in the ring.

Even the return of their six reconditioned World Cup All Blacks brought no improvement.

Match Data

The Hurricanes got the first points of the match when Piri Weepu playing at number 10 got a penalty for the Hurricanes.

He then followed that up with another penalty about ten minutes later as the Hurricanes grow in confidence.

The Bulls Derick Hougaard got one back for the Bulls so their first points came from a penalty.

Piri Weepu then slotted another penalty from almost the half way line to put the Hurricanes 6 points ahead.

Weepu had a fourth shot at goal with 7 minutes to go until the half and he again slotted the penalty.

Hougaard had a shot at a drop goal but the ball went wide. Then with 5 minutes remaining referee Brett Bowden awarded the Bulls a sitter of a penalty in front of the posts which Hougaard slotted.

The Half time score was Hurricanes 12 Bulls 6.

In the first few minutes of the second half both teams spent their time kicking the ball around.

Both teams are struggling to get their game flowing. It took almost 15 minutes of the second half for the scores to change but it happened when Derick Hougaard slotted another easy penalty for the Bulls.

Cory Jane got the ball from Weepu and darted through the Bulls turning left and right confusing the defence and then passing at the last moment to Hosea Gear who scored the first try of the match.

Weepu missed the conversion.

Fourie du Preez & Bryan Habana fired straight back at the Hurricanes and came within a metre of the Huricanes line but did not score the try.

There is a bit of handbags on the field and the end result is that Francois van Schouwenburg is sent to the bin for effectively the rest of the match.

It’s been a long tour for the Bulls and now that they are down to 14 it’s starting to show as the Hurricanes run the ball around.
