Scrum coach Du Randt was not sacked : SARU

The South African Rugby Union (Saru) say that there was nothing malicious about Springbok scrumming coach Os du Randt’s dismissal.

Du Randt says that he had been told by Springbok coach Peter de Villiers that he would be needed for the rugby world cup so he was surprised to receive a letter stating that he would not be needed any longer.

SARU say that Du Randt’s six-month contract as Springbok scrumming consultant came to an end and was simply not renewed.

There was speculation last year that Du Randt had fallen out with Coach Peter de Villiers on the end of year tour and that Du Randt’s sacking was done for financial reasons.

However Saru’s Communications Manager Andy Colquhoun says that his organisation are considering adding a few more consultants to the Springbok management team.

“There have been no other changes now,” Colquhoun told EyeWitness news.

“If there’s going to be any additions in the form of consultants, that would be announced as to when those appointments are made,” he said.

Colquhoun added that reports that Du Randt has been sacked are inaccurate.

“He has not been sacked; I mean he was there for six months. “

“He was taken on a short term basis and a decision has been made not to offer a renewal.”

“He has not been sacked; it was never more than that.”

Springbok coach De Villiers is believed to have offered a coaching position to former Australia coach Eddie Jones but Jones is said to have turned the offer down.

Jones was reportedly pushed forward by Fourie du Preez who is a fan of Jones and Du Preez plans to play for Jones in Japan next year.

Stormers Boss Rassie Erasmus is also been linked with a position with the Springboks but he too is said to have little interest in joining the current coaching team.
