Bulls beat Lions in Johannesburg

Match number 6 in the 2011 Super Rugby tournament is another South African conference clash and is between the Lions and the Bulls at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg.

We are waiting for the kick off. The Lions have gone full out to represent their new backers. There are feathered dancers and an impi (zulu warrior) all part of the pre-match show.


Fourie du Preez comes out on his own as its his 100th cap.


The match is underway.


1.00: The Lions start very strongly. They push the Bulls back into their 25 and win a penalty.


2.00: Elton Jantjies takes the penalty kick and the ball hits the post and bounces out. The Lions regain the ball and then the Bulls turn it over and boot it downfield.


4.00: It’s full on attack from both teams. The Bulls work the ball through six phases. Then 8 and they arives at the Lions tryline. Nine phases..all the way up to 14 phases.


6.00: On the 14th phase the Lions turn the ball over and counter attack and boot the ball way downfield but Kirchner is there and boots it out.


7.00: The Lions take a quick tap and they are looking like a new team. They put together 6 phases in attack in the Bulls 25. Both teams defences being tested.


10.00: It’s end to end stuff here in Johannesburg. Mitchell has transformed the Lions – but it is still early days.


14.00: The Bulls are all over the Lions on their 25. They attack relentlessly and finally the Bulls stretch the Lions and Kirchner scores in the corner.  


15.00: Morne Steyn misses the conversion.


16.00: The Bulls get the ball and Gerhard van den Heever  splits the Lions in half with his pace and runs round another two players and scores under the posts.


17.00: Morne Steyn adds the conversion. Gary Botha is off.


21.00: Penalty to the Bulls from the scrum. Steyn takes the kick and nails it.


24.00: The Bulls have not lost their edge and are still full of attack. They really don’t look like a team that has not played since May last year.


28.00: Another penalty for the Bulls. Morne Steyn takes the kick and nails it.


32.00: Bulls captain Victor Matfield is called over and told to tell his Bulls to keep the Bulls tackles lower (Bakkies Botha).


The Lions go on attack and they find a gap and Waylon Murray scores the Lions first try.


36.00: Elton Jantjies misses the conversion.


38.00: Penalty to the Bulls. Morne Steyn takes the kick and nails it.


40.00: Yet another penalty to the Bulls. Morne Steyn again kicks it.


The half time score was Lions 5 Bulls 24


The second half is underway.


42.00: The Lions scrum is really struggling.


44.00: The Lions work the ball into the Bulls 25 but then they give away possession. The Bulls win a line out but there is a knock on.


45.00: The Lions then get a 5m attacking scrum. They go through the phases on attack. 9  then 10 phases.


47.00: After 11 phases Fourie du Preez gives away a penalty so the LIons attack from close range.


48.00: As the Lions attack Stephan Dippenaar makes a professional foul and is promptly shown a yellow card. The Lions run the penalty but the Bulls ho
