Brussow’s Cheetahs ready for 2011 Super15

Springbok and Cheetahs star forward Heinrich Brussow says heavy competition for places in the Cheetahs squad will bond the team even tighter in 2011.

Brussow has recovered from a knee injury which ended his season early last year and although a few of the Cheetahs stars have left he says competition in the group will be an advantage.

The Cheetahs have lost prop Wian du Preez to Munster and wing Bjorn Basson to the Bulls but a couple of young players who were newbies in 2010 are part of the group for 2011.

“The guys look good and I’m positive about the year. We have a couple of good players and young guys who want to play together.” he told Beeld.

“There is a lot of competition. It makes it more fun because there is more pressure on the guys,” he says.

Brussow feels that the 2011 Cheetahs squad is stronger than the 2010 squad with players like flank Philip van der Walt, prop Coenie Oosthuizen, centres Barry Geel and Wilmaure Louw, eighth man Ashley Johnson and flyhalf Sias Ebersohn who will all be playing their second season of Super Rugby.

However the Cheetahs have little or no depth at flyhalf, wing and prop but they have more than enough depth among the loose forwards and in the centres.

The new format will put the Cheetahs depth to the test as it will not only be longer but it will also see more of the physical home derbies.

The Cheetahs and Brussow feel that the new format will actually suit them.

. “I think the new format is to our advantage because we play against more South African teams.

“Everyone knows we always do well in the Currie Cup series and do well against our own teams.”

“I don’t know why we struggle so much to win against overseas teams. We definitely have the self-confidence.”
