All change and All Black for ‘Canes

Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper wasted no time in bringing back his reconditioned All Blacks, naming all six of them in the starting XV in the side to face the Lions in a crucial Super 14 match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

In all Cooper made 10 changes to the team that was well beaten (27-14) by the Sharks last week.

But it is the return of the All Blacks that will give this side a far more menacing look and ensure the real Hurricanes hit Ellis Park on Saturday … not the gentle breeze that blew through Durban last week.

Up front All Blacks Jerry Collins, Jason Eaton, Andrew Hore, Chris Masoe and Rodney So’oialo all return to the pack that shows seven changes.

Only veteran lock Paul Tito retained his place in the number four jersey.

Rodney So’oialo comes in at number eight for Thomas Waldrom and takes over the captaincy from Tana Umaga. Chris Masoe and Jerry Collins take over on the flanks from Serge Lilo and Luke Andrews respectively.

Jason Eaton replaces Bernie Upton at lock, Neemia Tialata moves from loosehead prop to tighthead in place of Anthony Perenise, Andrew Hore takes over at hooker from Tone Kopelani and John Schwalger comes in at loosehead prop.

Behind the pack the sixth All Black, Piri Weepu, takes over at scrum-half from Alby Mathewson.

With Lome Fa’atau back on the right wing, Hosea Gear moves over the to left wing in place of David Smith.

Perenise, Andrews and Lilo all found places on the replacement bench, but Smith, Mathewson, Waldrom and Kopelani drop out of the matchday 22 altogether.

Hurricanes: 15 Cory Jane, 14 Lome Fa’atau, 13 Conrad Smith, 12 Tana Umaga, 11 Hosea Gear, 10 Blair Stewart, 9 Piri Weepu, 8 Rodney So’oialo (c), 7 Chris Masoe, 6 Jerry Collins, 5 Jason Eaton, 4 Paul Tito, 3 Neemia Tialata, 2 Andrew Hore, 1 John Schwalger.
