Exeter Chiefs ease past Newcastle Falcons

Exter Chiefs comfortable beat fellow Premiership team Newcastle Falcons 36-10 in the European Challenge Cup clash at Sandy Park.

Exeter Chiefs raced away to lead 22-0 at the break and continued to dominate the match and went on to score five tries in all.

European new-boys Exeter Chiefs kept alive their hopes of an Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final as they collected maximum points against English Premiership rivals Newcastle Falcons.

The Falcons slipped to their third successive Pool 3 defeat and left Sandy Park empty handed for the second time this season.

Chiefs coach Rob Baxter made 12 changes from the side that had been beaten at London Wasps in the Premiership last weekend but saw his side run in three tries before the break to build-up a match-winning 22-0 advantage.

That left the Chiefs with the goal of claiming one more try in the second half to match the bonus point that Pool leaders Montpellier had gained in their 39-14 home win over Bourgoin the night before.

They managed two more to clinch the full five points and are now only three points behind Montpellier at the top of the table, who they face in France in Round 6 next month.

Prop Ben Moon’s first try of the season got things moving for the home side and then replacement Michael Stupple converted a driving line-out into try number two. Outside half Ryan Davis converted both and added a penalty and the Chiefs were well in charge at 17-0.

Then came the best try of the half as Matt Jess latched onto a neat cross field kick from Davis and the Falcons were reeling at the break. Chad Slade notched another try for the home forwards to claim the bonus point before Andrew Higgins raced over for the fifth.

The Falcons picked up consolation scores from scrum half Mickey Youngs and wing Danny Williams, who had picked up a yellow card in the first-half.
