Anglo Welsh LV=Cup match could move abroad

London Wasps are considering playing their Anglo Welsh LV= Cup match against Harlequins on the 30th of January overseas – possibly in Abu Dhabi.

The Anglo Welsh LV= Cup is scheduled to be held at Adams Park but Wasps are holding talks about the feasibility of moving the match abroad.

The preferred location is thought to be Abu Dhabi which could make this a ground-breaking move for English domestic rugby.

“The club are looking into plans around this fixture but nothing is set in stone.” said a London Wasps statement.

“The club are in consultation with the Rugby Football Union, LV and Harlequins.

“We are always keen to find ways to be innovative and extend the footprint of the club, while promoting the sport, but at this time nothing is agreed.”

If the match goes ahead it would be the first competitive game between two English clubs to take place overseas and could open the way for Premiership games to follow suit if the match move is successful.

Football played with the idea of holding a 39th Premier League game overseas but when that idea came up with opposition it was dropped.

There is a feeling that rugby fans would be more flexible and the London Clubs hold a double header called the Big Game at Twickenham succesfully each year.

Saracens have also enjoyed success with moving their bigger matches to Wembley stadium.
