Gower to miss 2011 Six Nations tournament

Italian flyhalf Craig Gower is set to miss the 2011 Six Nations tournament as he needs surgery on his knee ligaments.

The former Australian Rugby league international player was injured playing for Italy when they lost 14-32 to Argentina.

“His recovery time is estimated at 120 to 180 days,” the Italian Rugby Federation said in a statement.

Gower was replaced by Luciano Orquera for Italy’s matches against Australia and Fiji and it is likely that he will take Gower’s place in the Six Nations.

He may however get opposition from Riccardo Bocchino who like Gower and Orquera wants play his way into Italy’s world cup squad.

The news comes a further blow for Italy as they have already lost flanker Mauro Bergamasco to a shoulder injury and he is not expected to return until the new year.

Italy kick off their 2011 Six Nations campaign in Rome on the 5th of February against Ireland.

After Ireland Italy face England at Twickenham, before home games with Wales and France and then they finish the tournament in Murrayfield against Scotland on the 19th of March.
