Kiwi prop Afoa to join Biarritz in Top 14

French Top 14 side Biarritz have signed New Zealander James Afoa from provincial side North Harbour as a replacement for injured prop Fabien Barcella.

Biarritz have already had to do without South African prop Eduard Coetzee, who suffered a left arm fracture at the end of October, and with Barcella out until April with a ruptured Achilles tendon the club had been scouting for replacements.

Biarritz are currently involved in the European Cup and manager Laurent Rodriguez said at the start of this week: “When you’re playing in the European Cup as well as the Top 14 you can’t afford not to have back-up at this position.”

Afoa, who will be 28 years old on December 6, is the brother of New Zealand international prop John Afoa and is of Samoan origin.

He is due to arrive in France on Monday and will cover for Barcella until he returns to action.
