Gloucester Rugby v Saracens LV=Cup preview

Gloucester have named Dave Attwood and Paul Doran-Jones in their team to start against Saracens in the Anglo Welsh LV=Cup tie on Saturday while Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu and Brett Deacon are both back from injury.

Attwood and Doran-Jones have both been training with England over the past two weeks and Attwood made his international debut as a replacement against New Zealand last Saturday.

However, neither player has been selected for the England 22 to face Australia this weekend and slot straight back into the Gloucester side.

Fuimaono-Sapolu is named for the first time since the win over Bath at the Rec on October 1st whilst Deacon has recovered from the leg injury that forced him to leave the field during the win over his former side, the Leicester Tigers, a fortnight ago.

And, after a couple of A League run outs following his comeback from a knee injury, Tim Taylor starts at fly half.

Also of note amongst the replacements is the selection of England U18 scrum half Dan Robson who is named in the matchday squad for the first time.

Head Coach Bryan Redpath, talking ahead of the team announcement, acknowledged that the visitors will present a tough challenge.

“They made a lot of changes last weekend and they have rotated their squad a lot. Saracens are a dangerous side who play a fairly expansive game.”

“They have some very talented players. You just have to look at Joubert and Britz and Goode and players like that. They’re a very good side and we have to respect them.”

“It won’t be easy, there’s no given. This tournament does have value and every club will see that.”

Meanwhile Steve Borthwick, Neil de Kock, Schalk Brits and Ernst Joubert are all named to start for Saracens.

Following on from his man of the match performance against Northampton Saints last week, 18-year-old Ben Ransom continues at full back while Owen Farrell, who has impressed so far this season on-loan at Bedford and in the victory over USA earlier this week, is named at fly-half.

With Brits starting alongside Deon Carstens and former Gloucester prop Carlos Nieto in the front row, it means England U20s hooker Jamie George is on the bench. Also among the replacements are Kevin Barrett and the fit-again Petrus du Plessis, while Sam Stanley is in line to make his competitive debut for the club just a few days after celebrating his 19th birthday.
