Scarlets v Leeds Carnegie LV= Cup preview

The Scarlets start their Anglo Welsh LV= Cup campaign on the back of a healthy start to the season (six wins from nine) and a good run in last year’s Anglo Welsh competition coming second in their pool; with wins against Wasps away and Worcester at home, drawing 15-15 away at Harlequins and only losing out to Cardiff Blues in the final pool stage.

The Scarlets narrowly missed the semi-final stage as Gloucester agonisingly sneaked through.

Head Coach Nigel Davies said: “The LV= competition gives some of our wider squad the chance to start, to get their hands on the Scarlets shirt and share in the team responsibility of maintaining our forward momentum. There’s a lot of competition for places at the moment and a strong spirit and commitment building throughout this squad.

“We have planned, in the context of our whole season, to rest a couple of our core players at this time, following a very intense series of matches in our first third of the season. As I have said before, we must rely on and have faith in the strength in depth we are building. Our philosophy is to develop our home-grown talent by giving them the platform to play at the top level.

“There’s a new breed of Scarlets coming through and these players are something to be equally excited and optimistic about.”

The Scarlets have won both of their two previous encounters with Leeds and their Anglo Welsh tournamant record reads won 9 lost 5 with an average of 24 points per game.

Leeds Carnegie’s squad for this Saturday’s opening game of the LV Cup in Llanelli against the Scarlets includes 13 players who have come through the club’s Academy structure.

In the starting line up the second row sees the only debutant in the starting line up Dominic Barrow lining up alongside James Craig.

17-year-old Barrow will become the first Academy player to debut for the club who was born after the club was formed in 1992.

Kearnan Myall will captain the side for the first time in a pack where only Mike MacDonald and Alfie To’oala are not from the Academy.

The bench sees a further three possible debutants in England U18 captain Chris Walker, A team captain Oliver Stedman and scrum half Craig Hampson.
