De Jongh start for Province in Currie Cup Semi

Western Province coach Allister Coetzee has announced his team for the Currie Cup Semi-final at Newlands against the Cheetahs with Juan De Jongh being named at centre and Jaque Fourie being left out of the team.

Springbok centre Jaque Fourie was ruled out of the match due to a foot injury he suffered on Saturday against the Natal Sharks at Newlands.

WP assistant coach Robbie Fleck on Tuesday said Fourie is definitely out for this Saturday.

Asked how severe the injury was and if the big and strong midfielder would be ready if Province advance to the final, Fleck said: “We hope so. A decision will be made tomorrow, but he is definintely out for this Saturday.”

Fleck said while Fourie’s withdrawal was a huge blow for WP, they were fortunate to fall back onto a centre combination of Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh.

De Villiers starred on the wing last Saturday, but will now shift inside to 13, with Gio Aplon moving to wing to make way for Conrad Jantjes at fullback.

“It is a big blow. Jaque has been immense this year for us. He is the best defensive 13 in the world and we all know what he can do on the attack. He scored some spectacular tries for the Stormers in this season’s Super 14 and we all know how much damage he can do on the attack.

“Jean and Juan can play well together and they have played well for us in the Currie Cup this season. We are in a good position in the sense that we can look to the other two as a combination going forward.”
