Lions lose star Currie Cup fullback

Lions coach John Mitchell confirmed on Monday that star fullback Jaco Taute would be out for up to 20 days with a shoulder injury, but insisted they had sufficient cover in that position.

After scoring an outstanding try in his team’s 22-20 victory over the Sharks, Taute left the field in the second half with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Deon van Rensburg.

“Jaco will be out for anything between 10 and 20 days with an AC joint injury which is fortunately not as serious as we though at first,” Mitchell said.

The setback could not have come at a more crucial time for the Lions who are looking to secure a place in the Currie Cup semifinals for the first time since 2008. They take on the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday in a do-or-die match.

Mitchell is, however, confident that whoever he selects to replace the 19-year-old will be up for the challenge.

“Michael Killian has played there before and we also have Burton Francis and Marius Delport who can all play there,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell added that Deon van Rensburg’s speedy return from injury would make team selection easier this week.
