Rassie Erasmus won’t leave WP to save Boks

Western Province have wasted no time to quell speculation that senior professional coach, Rassie Erasmus, will be parting ways with the Newlands-based union later this year.

Province have alerted the local media to its website notice which responds to an article published in a Cape afternoon daily suggesting Erasmus was likely to leave Province before the end of the year.

The offending story was headlined ‘WP loss could be Bok gain if Rassie moves on’.

The website notice reads: “WP Rugby senior professional coach, Rassie Erasmus, is contracted to WP Rugby until the end of 2012 and will not be leaving WP to take up a coaching position with SARU.

“Rassie is committed to WP Rugby and is a valued and respected member of the coaching staff. The rumours of a rift and an imminent move have absolutely no basis,” said Rob Wagner MD WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd.

There is a feeling in Cape rugby circles that following the media disclosures by Province executive members Thelo Wakefield and Peter Jooste that Erasmus may decide to call it the day at Newlands.

Wakefield and Jooste have criticised the lack of transformation and lack of opportunity for emerging players in Cape Town.

In some quarters, it has been felt Erasmus can offer the beleaguered Springboks valuable technical assistance as well as taking up the vacant SA Under-20 coaching position.
