French Top 14 rugby union’s newly promoted La Rochelle started their season with a 22-17 win over last year’s surprise package Castres on Saturday.
The home side overcame the sin-binning of replacement prop Andres Bordoy for a high tackle eight minutes from time and a pounding in the scrum to record a three-tries-to-two victory in what was their first game in the top flight in eight years.
Tries from full-back Sebastien Boboul, who also kicked two conversions and a penalty, impressive scrum-half Benjamin Ferrou and veteran Fijian back Norman Ligairi accounted the Atlantic seaport team’s points.
Castres, who were down 12-3 at the break, scored through No 8 Josefa Tekori and stand-off Cameron McIntyre, centre Seremia Bai hitting two conversions and a penalty.
