Unbeaten Province smash Griquas in Currie Cup

Western Province kept their unbeaten record in this year’s Currie Cup intact with a massive 50-3 win over Griquas on Saturday.

WP earned a bonus point for scoring six tries. Their victory followed losses in Kimberley in 2008 and 2009. Griquas never looked like the side that was third on the log before the encounter.

They were ineffective in attack and had little in their armory to breach the Western Province line.

The Capetonians now look like the early favourites to win their first Currie Cup trophy since 2001.

Although points were difficult to came by in the first half, it wasn’t for a lack of trying, but because of weaknesses in both teqams’ defence.

Griquas dominated possession and territory, but only had three points to show thanks to a Naas Olivier penalty.

The team from the Northern Cape had a few chances when WP were reduced to 14 players (Duane Vermeulen, WP No 8 got a yellow card for a dangerous tackle) but lacked the patience to put their opponents under enough pressure.

They opted to put ball to boot, without success.

They also lost crucial lineout possession at times when they had WP under pressure. WP led 12-3 at halftime and Griquas coach Dawie Theron must have had harsh words to say in the change room.

Like the previous two home games against the Sharks and Lions, Griquas left themselves with plenty to do in the second half.

They also trailed after 40 minutes in the previous encounters but had enough in the tank in those second halves. This time round there was no comeback.

WP was too good on the day. WP scored all six tries in the second half in which they ran Griquas off their feet. In the last quarter the home team hardly touched the ball.

The Springbok centre Juan de Jongh was named man of the match for his brilliant attacking play.

He kept his opponents very busy the whole afternoon and was rewarded with a try (the first of the match in the 46th minute).
